Background & History

St. Thomas Catholic School is named after St. Thomas the Apostle, the Apostle of India.  The church that St. Thomas established in India in the first century A.D. is the St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Church.  The church adjacent to the school, that owns and manages the school, is a parish of the St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago, a Diocese established to serve the community of Catholics from India who belong to this church established by St. Thomas.

The St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Church is an Oriental Catholic Church of the Eastern Rite that is in full communion with the Church of Rome, thus having allegiance to the Pope. The church’s firm loyalty, unconquerable faith, innate spirituality, and rich traditions make it extremely alive, having survived continuously for two millennia, the only church in the Communion of Catholic Churches still named after the apostle who established it.

The St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Church is renowned in India for its apostolate of education.  The church owns and manages about 4,000 schools, and 200 colleges in India, staffed by religious and lay persons.  Arguably, the foundation of learning and the quality of education in these institutions have contributed quite significantly to the development of India as a leader among nations in higher education.

The St. Thomas Catholic School is owned and managed by members of the community of Syro-Malabar Catholics in the Bay Area who come together to worship at the church in Milpitas.  The community consists of highly educated professionals in technology, healthcare, and business, who are generously giving their time and talent to establish an institution of learning that will follow the heritage of their Mother Church in India.

Word from Our Pastor

Dear Parents of St Thomas Catholic School,

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you and say that it is a great honor, blessing, and privilege to work with you and your family this coming year.

As we, the St Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, The St Thomas Catholic School and its Board of Direc-tors take over the school, and build on the vision of a Christian school that the Lord Jesus Christ has placed in our hands, we are excited to see how the Lord is shap-ing what was once thought to be impossible by some but not impossible for our God.

This coming year as we begin to partner with you, the Staff and Leadership of St Thomas Catholic School are committed to uphold the highest standard of education and to do our best to ensure that the experience of your children in our school will be positive and in a loving environment. We hope that their experience will chal-lenge and encourage their growth at a deeper level.

It is with great joy that we welcome you and your family to be a part of our family as we work together to raise up your children in the ways of the Lord as expressed in Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he/she should go: and when he/she is old, he/she will not depart from it.

Sincerely,

Rev Fr Kurian Varghese
